Matthew Goldsmith is the news editor of The Muleskinner and a graduate student at UCM. He recently graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in communication and is studying communication at UCM. During his time at Wichita State, he served as a sports writer at the student newspaper The Sunflower. Matthew has covered news and sports during his time at The Muleskinner.

COVID-19 Cases Decrease, Masks Continue

As of Sept. 17, the University of Central Missouri had 17 active student cases and one active faculty/staff case. Case numbers have reached highs of 30 student cases and six faculty/staff cases this semester. The above graph plots the number of student and faculty/staff cases since the beginning of the fall semester.

Dodge Durango that was destroyed for the charitable car bash put together by the two organizations. Car bash donors were able to hit the vehicle with a hammer. The car was provided by Richeys Auto Salvage in Holden, Missouri.

While 43 faculty positions were identified for retrenchment, 20 positions were vacant because of prior resignations and retirements. Only eight positions identified belong to tenured faculty, who have the option of appealing the decision. The other 15 positions are filled by instructors or tenured-track faculty.

During the first week of classes, the university hosted the Involvement Fair, Career Fair and other student activities. Students are recommended to wear masks outside and masks are require in university buildings. We dont know for sure whats going to happen, and we dont want to be caught not being prepared, so were trying to prepare for the worst because theres always that potential, Interim Health Center Director Diana Herman said.

According to UCMs Retrenchment Policy, Retrenchment is defined to be a reduction of faculty which is significantly beyond routine faculty staffing adjustments and/or reallocation. Retrenchment procedures shall be activated when it becomes necessary to implement plans to terminate tenured faculty or eliminate more than 3.5 percent of the total full-time budgeted faculty positions during an academic year.
