(COLUMBIA, Mo., AP) — A Missouri lawmaker who unsuccessfully championed a move to link state higher education funding to academic performance says he plans to renew the effort next year.
The Columbia Missourian (bit.ly/17vZss4) reports that Sen. David Pearce is committed to the plan initially pushed by Gov. Jay Nixon. It was later embraced by the state’s higher education governing board and the Department of Higher Education.
Pearce is a Warrensburg Republican who heads the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Education.
His proposal called for basing 10 percent of Missouri’s higher education funding on how well schools meet defined classroom goals. The performance standards covered such areas as graduation and dropout rates.
A 2012 report by the National Conference of State Legislatures said that 12 states use performance-based funding in higher education.
