Jennies Softball splits MIAA doubleheader at Missouri Southern

(JOPLIN, Mo.) – Jennies Softball (24-20, 14-12 MIAA) split an MIAA doubleheader at Missouri Southern (24-24, 11-15 MIAA) Saturday afternoon at Lea Kungle Field in Joplin, losing game one 3-2 before taking game two 3-1.
The Jennies took a 2-0 lead in game one after plating two runs in the top of the fifth on a fielder’s choice from Braylyn Bivens that drove in a run and an RBI single from Ali Jo Rogers.
The lead held until the bottom of the seventh inning when Missouri Southern’s Chloe Brown sent a double to deep right field that allowed three runs to score and give the Lions the win.
The Jennies outhit Missouri Southern in the first contest 7-4 but committed one error.
Jennies pitcher Megan Schallom pitched a complete game, striking out three, but took the loss to fall to 2-7 on the season.
Game two saw the Jennies take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Kristen Heil hit a single to shortstop, scoring Alex Groeger.
The Jens added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a fielder’s choice RBI from Jakki Prater and a Missouri Southern passed ball.
That would be all the Jennies needed for the victory as the Lions could only muster a single run in the bottom of the fifth.
Jessica Wilkes got the win in the circle for the Jennies to improve to 7-2 on the season, pitching 4.1 innings, striking out four while walking just one.
The Jennies are back in action Monday when they travel to Pittsburg State for an 11 a.m. MIAA doubleheader against the Gorillas. The doubleheader will mark the final pair of games for the Jens in the regular season.
