Registration open for annual Run for Freedom

The Veterans Assistance League will host this year’s 11th annual Run for Freedom 5K, 10K and Poker Walk on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The run begins at 9 a.m. at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, 1300 Veterans Road. The event offers professional timing services, moisture wicking T-shirts, medals for runners in 12 different age categories, cash prizes for overall winners, door prizes and refreshments, according to a news release.
The first 50 entrants will be entered in a drawing to win $100. The “Dollar Dash” raffle where a $1 ticket buys a chance to win $500 cash will also continue this year.
The Run for Freedom raises money to support the Veterans Home. Veterans participate in the Poker Walk free of charge with the help of volunteers who push their wheelchairs along the route.
“Last year, we raised enough money to replace the ailing soft serve ice cream machine in the Canteen,” said Eric Endsley, administrator. “This year, we hope to purchase another ‘Go Anywhere’ tandem wheelchair bicycle. This unique piece of equipment, which is basically a wheelchair mounted to the front of a bicycle, will enable our recreation therapy staff to take our veterans out for nostalgic, fresh air bike rides on beautiful days.”
Registration is $20 for the 5K, $25 for the 10K, and $15 for the Poker Walk. Online registration is available at valrun.eventbrite.com. Sponsorship and additional information is also available by calling Jen Eaton, communications coordinator, at 660-543-5064.
