Major John David Gentry, USAF, 74, died Thursday, Sept. 28. at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Sweeney-Phillips and Holdren Funeral Home with Reverend Louie Lowe officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
He was born on Oct. 26, 1942, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to Wilbur and Stella Gentry.
John enlisted into the United States Air Force on September 1, 1960, and retired as Major on April 1, 1985. He obtained his Master’s degree in Criminology from Michigan State University. He was also a tax preparer and realtor. He often officiated and refereed for child & adult teams of volleyball and softball. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Warrensburg. He was integral in helping start CROP Hunger Walks in Warrensburg, and was passionate about helping others in need.
John is survived by his brother, Don (Bonnie) Gentry, of Seattle, Washington; his daughters, Donna (Dusty) Hamilton, Tracy Nielson, Erika (Kelly) O’Bryant, and Vanessa Fenley; grandchildren, Michelle Basham, Joshua Basham, Kirsten Mendoza, Rebecca Basham, and Jesse Nielsen; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Stella Gentry; sister, Sue Moore, and grandson, Scott Gentry.
The family will receive friends Monday, Oct. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to First United Methodist Church CROPWALK and can be left in care of the funeral home.
