(WARRENSBURG, Mo., digitalBURG) – A Warrensburg girl and her grandmother remain hospitalized after their vehicle was hit by an Amtrak train Sunday evening.
Catherine M. Downing, 42, is in the intensive care unit at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, according to a hospital spokesman. Rebecca Langner, 3, is in critical condition at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The accident occurred as Downing was northbound on Mitchell Street. She failed to yield to the eastbound train and drove onto the train tracks along Mitchell Street, just south of Market Street, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports.
The train struck the vehicle, spinning it counterclockwise before striking the vehicle a second time. The vehicle went off the east side of the road, overturned and came to rest on its driver’s side, according to Highway Patrol reports.
Cpl. Dustin Mayden said a train conductor and an unidentified person pulled the 3-year-old girl from the vehicle, according to an Associated Press report.
None of the 170 people on the Amtrak train were injured. The train was delayed about an hour before it continued to St. Louis, according to the Associated Press.
