Kirksville pays fine for water treatment problems

(KIRKSVILLE, Mo., AP) — The city of Kirksville has agreed to pay $8,550 in fines to the Environmental Protection Agency for not conducting required inspections at industrial treatment sites for the last several years.
The Kirksville Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/15MvWuS) the fine was imposed even though the three facilities that should have been tested are using less hazardous chemicals and water treatment, ending the need for testing or different treatment by the city.
The city council voted Monday night to pay the fine.
City Manager Mari Macomber said the city told the state four years ago that it wanted to discontinue its industrial water treatment program because no company’s discharge required the process.
But the EPA said the city should have been inspecting A.T. Still University, Kraft Foods and Northeast Regional Medical Center.
