Board approves settlement with ousted president

(JOPLIN, Mo., AP) — Missouri Southern State University has reached a settlement agreement with ousted president Bruce Speck.
The university in Joplin announced Wednesday that Speck will receive $185,400 — the equivalent of a year’s salary — along with housing and health insurance through the end of the year.
Speck’s contract with the university was terminated last week. The Joplin Globe reports (http://bit.ly/1bZdcIG) Missouri Southern officials have not said why Speck was fired and he has been unavailable for comment.
The agreement requires Speck to return university property and prohibits him from suing the university. Speck had two years left on his contract when he was fired.
The university’s president’s council is overseeing daily operation of the school.
