Story by Andy Lyons, News Editor—

Rumors circulated last week that Ziyad T. Abid was going to bond out of Johnson County Detention Center and be deported to his home country of Saudi Arabia.
At a bond hearing April 9, Judge R. Michael Wagner ruled that after reviewing the file, he amended Judge Cook’s prior order concerning bond and ordered no bond set in this case.

A trial date is set for the second defendant in the shooting death of Warrensburg bar owner William “Blaine” Whitworth.
Abid, charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, has a pretrial conference scheduled for April 29.
The trial is set to begin June 4 at the Johnson County Justice Center.
Reginald L. Singletary, also charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, has a pretrial conference scheduled for Aug. 5. His trial is set for Sept. 17-20 at the Johnson County Justice Center.
Abid was previously held on a $2 million bond. During the April 9 hearing, Wagner said that the Saudi government had deposited the $2 million in the court’s account, but didn’t go through a bondsman.
There is concern that if Abid had bonded out, Immigration and Customs Enforcement could take him into custody, allowing him to return to Saudi Arabia because his student visa is no longer valid and he is considered to be in the U.S. illegally.
Singletary is also being held at the Johnson County Jail on a $1 million bond. He told police after he was arrested that he shot Whitworth with a handgun “at the request of Abid in exchange for money from Abid,” according to court records.
Abid and Singletary appeared separately for arraignment Oct. 9. Both pleaded not guilty.
Abid’s next hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. May 3.
