History professor says drones helping at archaeological digs

(ST. LOUIS, AP) — Saint Louis University archaeologists are getting some high-tech help from drones and other gadgets.

History professor Thomas Finan says drones, along with high-speed computer applications and mapping software, are combining with sensors that can collect multi-spectral image.
For nearly 20 years, Finan has taken students on archaeological digs at a number of sites in Ireland. His team uses traditional tools, but he says aerial surveys from a drone have allowed for collection of an unprecedented amount of digital data.
Finan believes the material and information being collected has the potential to change the understanding of the 13th century in Ireland.
