(WARRENSBURG, Mo., AP) — Officials at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri say a senior airman who was shot over the weekend while off base has died of his injuries.
A statement from the base on Sunday said John J. Bottom, who was assigned to the 509th Security Forces Squadron, was shot at a residence in Warrensburg. The statement says Bottom was taken to a Kansas City hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear. The Johnson County, Missouri, sheriff’s office was investigating the shooting, the statement said.
Earlier Sunday, the Johnson County sheriff’s office said it had arrested a suspect in a shooting in the county, but neither the sheriff’s office nor the base would say if the arrest was linked to the shooting of the airman. The suspect fired a handgun inside a home early Saturday, striking a friend, a sheriff’s office statement said.
Whiteman is about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City.
