St. Louis Co. town weighs ban on texting

(KIRKWOOD, Mo., AP) — Missouri already bans texting for young drivers. The city of Kirkwood in St. Louis County is considering taking that a step further — prohibiting all drivers from texting.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1pPFhxK) reports that a bill introduced at a City Council meeting Thursday advanced with unanimous support. It would go beyond the state law that prohibits texting for drivers 21 and younger.
Three other St. Louis County towns — Florissant, Manchester and St. John — previously enacted all-age-group bans. Critics say it isn’t government’s job to impose regulations on what takes place inside a car.
Attorneys disagree on whether cities even have the authority to pass local bans.
