(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., AP) — The St. Louis police chief wants a judge to strike down the ballot summary for a proposed Missouri constitutional amendment dealing with gun rights.
A Cole County judge was to hear arguments Wednesday on a request for a temporary restraining order barring elections officials from giving voters ballots with the disputed wording.
The request comes in a lawsuit by St. Louis Police Chief Samuel Dotson III and Rebecca Morgan, a member of the Missouri chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
Their lawsuit says the summary written by legislators for the August ballot measure implies that it’s establishing a right to bear arms that already exists. The lawsuit says the summary fails to note that the measure would subject laws restricting gun rights to strict legal scrutiny.
