Dad killed, son hurt while taking food to pantry

(DESOTO, Mo., AP) — An eastern Missouri man is dead and his 19-year-old son badly hurt after their truck crashed while they were doing volunteer work for a church food pantry.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/JLCtPN) reports that 58-year-old Michael Akers died in the accident Wednesday. His son, Christopher, is hospitalized in critical condition.
The father and son volunteered about twice a week for the pantry at their church, Emmanuel Baptist in DeSoto. Michael Akers, a retired Chrysler worker, was a deacon at the church, his son an Eagle Scout.
The crash happened south of Festus as the Akers were in a box-truck returning to church after picking up food for the pantry. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the truck went off the road, hit a tree and caught fire.
