KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A nonprofit group is determined to save the longtime Kansas City home of Negro Leagues star Buck O’Neil.
O’Neil became a baseball legend and community spokesman before he died in 2006. He lived for most of his adult life in the house in southeast Kansas City.
A group called Friends of Community Preservation has made fixing O’Neil’s home its first project. The group hopes to restore old iconic homes throughout the city.
The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/QdQbvQ ) the project needs at least $100,000. O’Neil willed the house to the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, which will decide what to do with it after renovations are done.
The group has put a new roof on the house and completed other repairs while also raising funds for the project.
