(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The first downtown building owner was recently awarded a grant to help make façade improvements.
Sandy Irle, the owner the building that houses Café Blackadder, said the grant money will be used to make masonry repairs to the front of the building and install new fabric on the front awning, according to a news release. The building, located at 121 N. Holden St., is 123 years old, and the current façade dates to the 1940s.
“The grant committee is very excited about this first grant award and hope more applications will follow as a result,” Barbara Carroll, community development director, said in a news release.
City officials launched a Downtown Façade Grant Program in April. This is a dollar-for-dollar matching grant program with a maximum of $1,000 in grant funds available per award, per grant cycle, according to a news release. The grant cycle runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30.
Only one grant per cycle may be awarded to a property. Eligible buildings must be at least 75 years old and located within the Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri boundary. The improvements must be performed on the front or rear façade of the building and must be visible to the public, according to a news release.
The DREAM Initiative is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Missouri Development Finance Board and Missouri Housing Development Commission, according to www.modream.org. The program helps Missouri communities with technical and financial assistance for downtown revitalization.
Applicants may apply through Sept. 30 by submitting an application and a description of the proposed work. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and are approved by the grant committee, which is comprised of one representative from the Historic Preservation Commission, Warrensburg Main Street Inc. and the City of Warrensburg.
The types of work that may be funded include masonry repair, tuck pointing, signage, awnings, window and door repair, painting, cornice repair, and building front improvements.
The grant application is available on the city’s website at www.warrensburg-mo.com/business-2/economic-development-2/facade-grant/.
