(DURANT, Okla.) – Jennies softball (2-0) swept day one of the Southeastern Regional Invitational Friday at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex, defeating Arkansas-Monticello 2-1, and Cameron 7-5, in eight innings.
In the first game against the Arkansas-Monticello Cotton Blossoms, the Jennies scored what proved to be the game winning two runs in the top of the first inning after freshman Jill Lucas hammered a double to right-center, scoring Medora West and Braylyn Bivens for the 2-0 lead.
The Cotton Blossoms answered with a run in the bottom of the third after Beth Johnson singled to right, making it 2-1 heading into the fifth. That was as close as they got as the Jennies defense shutout the Blossoms through the remaining four innings to preserve the win.
Jennies sophomore right-hander Katie Shockley pitched a complete game, striking out four Blossoms while only walking four to move to 1-0 on the season.
The Jennies then pulled out a tough 7-5 victory over the Cameron Aggies in game two of the day, needing eight innings to earn the win. Cameron jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first. The Jens took a 2-1 lead but the Aggies answered with a pair of runs of their own to regain a 3-2 advantage.
UCM tied the game at three with a run in the top of the seventh and kept Cameron from scoring in the bottom half of the inning to force extra innings. The Jennies plated four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 7-3 lead and kept the Aggies to two runs in the bottom of the inning to escape with a 7-5 win.
The Jennies return to the diamond Saturday for day two of the Southeastern Regional Invitational. The Jens will face Arkansas Tech at noon before playing Ouachita Baptist at 4 p.m.
