Missouri Senate panel advances student transfer solution

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., AP) — A potential solution to problems with the state’s student transfer system that have caused financial hardship for one St. Louis-area school district is moving forward again in the Missouri Senate.
A Senate panel asked to review the proposal’s cost approved a student transfer bill Thursday.
The state’s transfer law requires failing school districts to pay tuition for students to attend better-performing schools in the area. The proposed change would first let students transfer to better schools in their district.
In Normandy, the school system’s had to pay for transfers and more than 600 students have applied to transfer next year.
Another proposal stalled in committee because of roughly $200 million in estimated state and local expenses next fiscal year.
This version is estimated to cost roughly $24 million next year.
