In Tuesday night’s high school tennis sectionals, McKayla Wells placed first and Hally Piontek placed second, allowing them to play individually in the upcoming state match.
Wells, ranked number one for the Tigers, remained undefeated in conference. Head coach Elle Liebnitz said, “McKayla is prepared for state this year because she has state experience from last year. She has also had a great season this year.”
“We had a young team this season and we’ve improved a lot,” said Wells. “The coaches were also there for us and kept us from getting down. They not only made us strong as a team, they made us strong mentally.”
Piontek, ranked second, started playing tennis this year.
“She is ready for state because she has the experience of big time competitions before with other sports,” Leibtnitz said. “She will compete well.”
“The team is doing well because we push each other to the best of our abilities,” Piontek said.
Wells and Piontek will play at state on Oct. 25.
Coach Liebnitz is proud of her team as a whole. “The learning curve for these young players is drastic,” she said. “This is a completely different team than I had at the beginning of the year.” The team will play on Oct. 19 for a chance at a team state spot.
