Welcome, new students, to our MuleNation! We hope you’ve successfully moved in and enjoyed the Kickoff events so far.
As the editor-in-chief of the Muleskinner, I wanted to personally invite you to join our registered student organization, which is open to all students. The Muleskinner publishes a printed newspaper each month and maintains our website, www.muleskinnernews.com. Our goal is to inform our community through news that is written by students, for students.
From its founding in 1878, the Muleskinner has had many homes, but now, we’re thrilled to announce we will be moving into the James C. Kirkpatrick Library! While our new student newsroom on JCKL’s first floor gets a fresh renovation, you can find us holding it down in our interim space at JCKL 2305. Come say hi!
Whether you’re into writing, photography, sales, or just want to be part of campus storytelling, there’s a place for you here. No experience is needed – just bring your passion. We can’t wait for you to be part of telling the stories of UCM in 2025, one headline at a time.
If you’re interested in joining, here are some ways you can get involved:
- Content Creation
This category includes opportunities focused on producing creative or journalistic work, such as writing, photography, illustrating, videography, podcasting and creating comics. Students interested in storytelling, journalism, or multimedia can contribute original content for print, digital or broadcast formats.
- Media Production & Design
This includes roles centered on visual communication and digital engagement, such as graphic design, social media and marketing. Through these roles, students shape the visual identity of the Muleskinner, manage its online presence and develop promotional campaigns.
- Operations & Engagement
This category focuses on the behind-the-scenes and outreach work, including business, sales, logistics and event planning. Those interested in management, coordination or community engagement can contribute by supporting operations, promoting events and ensuring smooth workflows.
As a volunteer at the Muleskinner, you can choose your own projects and build your resume. You can also log your volunteer hours through the Student Activities Office to count towards volunteer appreciation certificates. Plus, joining the Muleskinner is a great way to meet new people, get to know campus and learn about community events.
If you don’t end up joining the Muleskinner, you can always enjoy our content! Pick up a paper. Check out our website and social media. Drop by our office in the library to say hello or tell us what stories you would like to see next. Our paper is created for students like you, so we truly value your input and engagement.
For more information on how to get involved, you can join our organization on Central Connect, UCM’s platform for student organizations, to see when we hold meetings and events. You can also come to our office at JCKL 2305 at any time or attend our weekly pitch meetings. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected].
Our doors are always open. Best of luck to you all in your first semester!
