Many believe pursuing one’s dreams is not always possible in one’s home country. For most, attending college and connecting with one’s future workforce is an integral part of making dreams a reality. According to the University of Central Missouri’s Office of International Student Services, more than 3,427 international students attend UCM, representing 55 countries.
“UCM is committed to providing affordable access and opportunities to international students in its academic programs,” Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Tim Crowley said.
During the 2024 International Education Week from Nov. 18 to 22, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education published their annual Open Doors Report on the International Educational Exchange. The report provided statistical information surrounding the international programs across America’s colleges and universities.
“As we celebrate 75 years of Open Doors, we are thrilled to report that this year marks a record high of international students in the United States,” Institute of International Education CEO Allan Goodman said in a press release.
International students shared their stories of adapting to new cultures and experiences and navigating challenges such as language barriers and homesickness.
“[There are] a lot of differences. People are calmer and slow here, dress more casually, people drive a lot more here than in Columbia,” senior Lina Arrieta, an international student from Columbia, said.
International students also discussed their experiences within a new culture and how it felt to experience new traditions. They also advised those wishing to study abroad.
“Keep an open mind, be willing to experience things, don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Mingzhu Zhu, a graduate student from Guangzhou, China, said. “Have pride in your own culture and traditions.”
