In Dec. 2023, the Humphreys Building housing Safety Sciences, Criminal Justice, ROTC and many other programs were shut down for renovation. The renovation aims to provide a more collaborative learning environment while also improving energy efficiency.
“The reason the Humphreys was shut down was because we received funds from the state to do a transformative project on campus,” Tim Castilaw, Associate Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities, said. There will be several improvements coming to the building after the renovations are completed.
“The renovated building will house modernized classrooms and open collaboration areas. Faculty open office areas and students Support Office suites including the mental health counseling center. You’ll also house ROTC and a new E-sport center,” Castilaw said. Although the improvements are for the good of students and faculty many, are still being affected.
“It has really affected the safety science classes for sure. My professors are just not used to the technology and it sometimes affects how they present in class,” Tommy Dreiling, senior occupational safety sciences major said. Despite the hardships imposed, many students are optimistic to see what improvements are to come.
Joseph Pereira, senior Criminal Justice major said, “I really haven’t been affected but it’s weird to have the building you’ve had most of your classes in be shut down and renovated. I’m excited to see how it will turn out.”
