Music on Repeat: ‘I Know I’m Funny haha’ by Faye Webster (2021)

Faye Webster made waves in the indie folk scene this year following the release of her third record, “I Know I’m Funny haha.” The record is a gentle listen, and it’s capable of striking listeners powerfully through calming melodies and instrumentation. Lap steel guitar backdrops, rhythmic drums and colorful guitar tones combine to allow Webster to paint weary pictures of days spent indoors, a reflection of the introverted singer-songwriter. Webster spreads her wings on songs like “Cheers,” while songs like “Both All the Time” are devastating and crippling. This variation in aesthetic, while maintaining a relatively consistent sound, is part of the genius of Faye Webster. Her witty and comical lyrics mean just as much to her as the earnest ones, as they all contribute to a specific tonality or sensation. “I Know I’m Funny haha” flows from track to track effortlessly, creating a floaty and laid back vibe.
