Supreme Court justice's legacy continues on in Black History month discussion

Delia Gillis, Center of Africana Studies Director, guides the conversation at the Thurgood Marshall discussion in the Elliott Student Union atrium Thursday, Feb. 1. The discussion included a mixed group of individuals analyzing the Supreme Court justice’s legacy in honor of Black History month.

Delia Gillis, Center of Africana Studies Director, mediated the event with Amber Lancaster, assistant professor of Counselor Education.

The event welcomed professionals, students and community members from all different backgrounds – most participants involved with an education or Africana studies course – added up to a turnout of approximately 40.

Gillis and Lancaster answered and proposed questions to the group; topics involved racial traumas, culture education and privilege responsibility.

Following the discussion was a screening of the film “Marshall,” a biopic of the Supreme Court justice’s life and impact in the civil rights movement, in the Union Cinema.
