(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – A shooting occurred around 9 a.m. Friday in the 300 block of East Market Street near Sterling Elementary School where a person was shot in the leg.
Lt. Andrew Munsterman said a man was shot in the leg and a passerby called the instance into officials.
Warrensburg Police Chief Rich Lockhart said the victim told officers he was walking, minding his own business when he felt a pain in his leg, not realizing he had been shot.
Lockhart also said the man was in his late 20s and was transported to the hospital shortly after the incident occurred.
Police interviewed the victim and neighbors in the surrounding area, however, Lockhart said facts within the stories contradicted each other. The victim does not want to prosecute the shooter.
The police department notified the district when the incident occurred. All schools in the Warrensburg district were put in lockdown to ensure the safety of students.
Mike Scott, assistant superintendent of the Warrensburg School District, said the schools were only placed into an exterior lockdown where the students were still able to move around inside classrooms, but not outside.
“From (the information obtained) we decided to go into a lockdown until we could obtain further information, and then a little while later, we received the OK. The police department told us it was okay to get out of our lockdown,” Scott said.
