Dear Editor,
I found the first sentence to the Sept. 7 story, UCM Health Center and Western Missouri Medical Center to Host “Mammo” Days, insensitive and insulting, both as a woman and a journalist.
To relate the second leading cause of death among women as “boobs being important in our society,” completely ignores the travesty of this disease and the importance of getting preventative screenings.
The true lead is that for the first time the UCM Health Center and the local hospital are teaming together to provide convenient screenings to UCM employees and their spouses, retirees and students. In the future, when you write about breast cancer, please defer from using the word, “boobs,” to reference a disease that has killed so many and tragically altered peoples’ lives.
Sincerely,
Dalene Abner
