MANKATO, Minn. – No. 12 Jennies soccer saw their season come to a conclusion in the first round of the NCAA-II Central Regional, falling to No. 19 Southwest Minnesota State, 3-1 at The Pitch on the campus of Minnesota State on Friday afternoon.
The Jennies (14-4-2) fell behind, 1-0 in the 24th minute when Vanesa Corona scored off a free kick from 20 yards out on the left side.
SMSU’s Miranda Cadena tacked on the second goal for SMSU in the 35th minute, finding herself on the receiving end of a Sarah Keppler pass and converting into the right side of the net.
Central Missouri jumped back into the game when Julie Ireland scored off a rebound in the 36th minute, slicing the deficit to 2-1. The score was Ireland’s team-leading 11th goal on the year.
In the 80th minute, the Mustangs provided themselves with some breathing room, scoring on a Cadena goal on a pass from Kendahl Fisher.
The Jennies outshot the Mustangs, 19-12, with a 9-7 edge in shots-on-goal.
Jessica Grindstaff was tagged with the loss, falling to 8-3-0 this season. She made a save and allowed two goals in 45 minutes before being replaced by Morgan Hartzler to begin the second half. Hartzler saved three shots while allowing a goal.
