Mary Jane Scotten Bailey died Friday, March 2.A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday March 8, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Missouri, with an interment to follow at Forest Hills cemetery in Kansas City. The family wecomed friends to visitation from 4-6 p.m. on Wenesday, March 7 at Sweeney-Phillips and Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
She is remembered for her positive nature and gratitude for the many blessings in her life.
She was the daughter of Peter V. and Lula Ficken Scotten of Sedalia, Missouri, where she was raised and attended Smith Cotton High School. She obtained her Associate of Arts degree from William Woods College, and then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Mary Jane valued her experience assisting her hard-working parents who owned Scotten Book store in Sedalia. She learned how much it took to make a living running a small community store. She was grateful for all the opportunities and encouragement her parents provided. She was close to her extended family, particularly her sister, Betty Bob Jones, nieces, nephews, cousins and a lifetime of friends from Warrensburg, Sedalia, and her college years.
Mary Jane married Harold Reed Bailey Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri, and moved to Warrensburg in 1959 where they raised their family. Primarily a homemaker, she also worked as an aptitude test administrator and enjoyed her interaction with students throughout the region. Mary Jane was a passionate student of the stock market and a founding member of Warrensburg Investment Club.
As a long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church, she served the congregation as Sunday school teacher, vestry member, altar guild, and women’s guild. Mary Jane highly valued the way members of the Christ Church community helped to raise each other’s children with compassion, kindness and love.
Mary Jane is survived by three children, Mark Bailey of Mission Hills, Kansas, Anne Bailey Selig of Groveland, Massachusetts, and Peter Bailey of Warrensburg; six grandchildren: Madison, Sean, and Nick Bailey and Kate, Sarah, and Scott Selig; sister Betty Bob Jones of Sedalia.
She took great pride in the character and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, instilling the importance of family, education, and optimism.
