Mo. man loses after challenging deputies to race

(VICHY, Mo., AP) — A Missouri man is jailed after he allegedly challenged sheriff’s deputies to a race before speeding through a small central Missouri town.
Police say the man, from St. Clair, pulled up to Maries County deputies who were helping a stranded motorist on Highway 63 near Vichy Sunday night. He asked if they wanted to race and drove off.
Sheriff Chris Heitman says deputies chased the vehicle at speeds of more than 90 mph into the city of Vienna. Eventually, officers hit the car and stopped it. Heitman says officers had to drag the man out of the car.
The sheriff says the 31-year-old man appeared to be impaired. He says the suspect has several prior felony convictions.
The man is in the Maries County Jail pending a warrant application.
