Johnson County Cares hosts its first housing symposium

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) — Local group Johnson County Cares will host its first Housing Symposium from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 4, at Western Missouri Medical Center. The event is free to attend, and lunch is provided. Those interested must register by Aug. 1 to guarantee lunch.
The symposium will offer educational opportunities for both landlords and tenants, and will also provide the opportunity for conversations and collaborations around the issue of the need for more safe, affordable housing in the community.
Sessions for landlords include: Supportive Housing, Safe and Affordable Housing, Alternatives to Eviction, and Cultural Awareness. Sessions for renters include: Leases 101, Budgeting, Rights and Responsibilities, and Being an Empowered Renter. At the conclusion of the event, a session for all attendees will include: Pest Issues, Fair Housing, and Seeing the Other Side.

Johnson County Cares is a collaboration between local social service agency representatives, churches, the University of Central Missouri, Whiteman AFB and concerned individuals to network and leverage resources in service of our neighbors struggling with poverty and homelessness. The group meets the third Friday of every month at 9 a.m. in the Jack Moore Community Room at the west end of the train depot in downtown Warrensburg, and everyone is welcome.
