Police say 18-year-old shot self after officer confrontation

(NORMANDY, Mo., AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a suburban St. Louis 18-year-old they say shot himself in the face after he was reported to be suicidal and exchanged gunfire with responding police. Relatives dispute this account.
Investigators say Amonderez Green of Florissant died Thursday morning at a hospital, more than 14 hours after the shooting in Normandy, adjacent to Ferguson.
Normandy police Cpl. Tameika Sanders says Green pulled out a gun when confronted by officers and opened fire. Sanders says an officer shot at Green but missed, and Green ran off. Sanders says officers later heard a gunshot and found Green wounded, a gun nearby.
Green’s father, Jermell Simpson, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he doesn’t believe the police account that his son shot himself, calling that “a total lie.”
