(ST. LOUIS, AP) — A St. Louis area high school has canceled its football program for next season because so few players signed up.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1e6LClf) the school board canceled football at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School for the 2015 season after two years of low student interest.
Officials say for the 2015 fall season, fewer than a dozen players signed up, far less than the 23 players recommended. The school has 284 students, with 146 boys.
Board President Nelson Mitten says even if they could field 23 players, the board’s primary focus would be “profound concern for student safety.” He says last season the team had to forfeit a game because there weren’t enough healthy players.
Officials also say other sports, including soccer, are taking potential players from football.
