(COLUMBIA, Mo., AP) — Columbia College has awarded an honorary degree to a former member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.
The Columbia Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/1ve4Kis) reports that Col. Charles McGee received the degree Saturday after his son, Ron, gave the commencement address. The Tuskegee Airmen were America’s first black fighter pilots.
The younger McGee is a retired Air Force captain and said it was persistence for perfection that led him to a successful career. He now works for Boeing, training pilots for the 787 Dreamliner and simulators. Ron McGee advised the graduates to focus on the same goal.
He also said his persistence came in part from learning about what his father faced to fly and fight for his county. He says it “amazes” him how his father serves as an inspiration to others.
