Dickens Christmas set for Dec. 6 downtown

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Downtown Warrensburg will transform into a scene of living windows and period costumes Saturday, Dec. 6, for the annual Dickens Christmas.
The program is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in downtown Warrensburg with more than 20 businesses participating this year, according to a news release.
Shop windows will feature local artists working on projects. The daylong event will also include horse and wagon rides, live music, strolling carolers, chestnuts roasting on an open fire and a tree lighting ceremony. Children from the Early Childhood Opportunity Center will decorate the Christmas tree on the Johnson County Courthouse lawn. The tree lighting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Father Christmas will be part of the festival along with Askew Theater performers, strolling the streets as Dickens characters.
There will be hot wassail at Stone House Pub, a Boy Scout Troop 513 poinsettias sale, a children’s scavenger hunt, kids crafts at Downtown Studio, cookie decorating at Old Drum Coffeehouse, and live musical performances by local groups such as New Century Dulcimers and The Warrensburg Recorder Consort.
Missouri author and illustrator Cheryl Harness will participate in the program this year. Harness is a graduate of UCM and currently resides in Independence. She has written and illustrated more than 30 children’s books. Cheryl will be the featured artist at Dean Williamson Furniture.
Joshua Taft, assistant professor at UCM, will present a program on Charles Dickens titled “God Bless Us Everyone: Dickens & the Meaning of Christmas.” The program is sponsored by Trails Regional Library and will take place at Heroes Restaurant at 3 p.m.
This year’s Dickens will also include Tiny Tim’s Soup Contest from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Participating downtown businesses will have a soup featured in their store for the contest. Customers can purchase a $5 ticket to taste the soups. At the end of the day, the judging sheets will be totaled to choose a winner. Tickets go on sale Dec. 1 and will be sold throughout the day of Dickens Christmas at the Warrensburg Main Street office at 111 N. Holden St.
