Former South East Elementary School rededication ceremony set for Aug. 29

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – A committee of Warrensburg residents along with University of Central Missouri employees and alumni are planning a rededication ceremony for the former South East Elementary School at 415 E. Clark St.
The event is set for Friday, Aug. 29, and is being coordinated by the South East School Historic Preservation Committee, which is comprised of individuals who either attended or have some association with the former educational facility. The school opened in 1955, and after being vacated in recent years, reopened in 2014 as the new site of the UCM Facilities, Planning and Operations South East Complex.
The rededication ceremony is planned for 2 p.m. at the South East Complex, and will be followed by a picnic. There will be an antique car show presented by members of the Warrensburg Wheels Car Club, and a live radio remote by KOKO 1450 AM. Facility tours also will be available, according to a news release.
Tom McCormack, a Warrensburg resident and university employee who attended first through sixth grades at the school, said the event is open to anyone who is interested, but the committee hopes people who attended the school will join in the celebration.
“This is basically a rededication recognizing the transition of the school from an educational facility to an educational support facility,” McCormack said.
He said the rededication ceremony is planned one day prior to the school’s 59th anniversary.
South East Elementary School opened on Aug. 30, 1955. After the facility closed, the university obtained the property as part of a $60 million capital improvement plan that required relocating the General Services Building on South Street to make room for the new 325-bed student housing-retail facility known as The Crossing – South at Holden. The Crossing is expected to be completed by the start of the fall 2015 semester.
The GSB is now located at the site of the former South East Elementary School. The actual school building, which still stands, was renovated and currently houses custodial, grounds, procurement, general services, event setup and facilities administrative personnel. A large metal building constructed on the north side of the school also accommodates the print shop, building trades and a mechanical garage.
