Prosecutor released from Ferguson lawsuit

(COLUMBIA, Mo., AP) — A judge has dismissed former Boone County prosecutor Kevin Crane from a $100 million civil rights lawsuit filed by a man whose murder conviction was vacated.

U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey on Tuesday agreed that Krane, now a Boone County Circuit judge, should be dismissed from the lawsuit filed by Ryan Ferguson.
Ferguson was convicted in 2005 of killing Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt, but his conviction was vacated last year. He sued Crane and several other defendants, alleging they violated his civil rights.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1AdkZ3B) Laughrey refused to dismiss Boone County, the city of Columbia and investigator Ben White from the lawsuit, which also names Columbia police Chief Randy Boehm, former Sgt. Stephen Monticelli, investigator William Haws and six former detectives.
