(GREENVILLE, Miss., AP) — Supermarket chain Kroger is shutting down its store on U.S. Highway 82 in Greenville, idling 70 workers.
The Cincinnati-based chain’s Delta Division, which includes all or part of five states, announced the decision Wednesday.
The U.S. 82 grocery opened in 1969 and was the chain’s first in Greenville. It will close Aug. 23, said Joe Bell, spokesman for Kroger’s Memphis-based Delta Division.
Bell told the Delta Democrat-Times (http://bit.ly/1l0Bjvw) the U.S. 82 location’s current sales volume “simply isn’t there to maintain the store.”
The U.S. 82 store’s 70 employees, roughly half of whom work full time and include two managers, “all will be offered positions” at other Kroger-owned groceries, including its grocery on Martin Luther King Boulevard, the chain’s only other Greenville location, as well as those in Clarksdale, Cleveland and Jackson, among others, Bell said.
“This was obviously a very difficult decision for us to make,” he said. “It’s hard on everybody, it’s hard on the associates, it’s hard on customers who are used to shopping there and it’s hard on people in the organization itself.”
Bell said the U.S. 82 store is the first that Kroger’s Delta Division, which operates 115 groceries in five states, has closed this year. It is the chain’s 11th store closing nationwide.
The Delta Division comprises all of Arkansas and Mississippi as well as southwest Kentucky, southern Missouri and western Tennessee.
