(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – Children can view and create their own art Thursday when the Gallery of Art and Design and the Art Education program at the University of Central Missouri hosts the Gallery Kids program.
The Gallery Kids workshop is scheduled for 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Thursday in the gallery at 217 E. Clark St. in Warrensburg.
Kids ages 5-12 are invited to tour the current Summit Artists’ Exhibition, explore mini-museums by UCM students of Art Education, and create masks based on Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” book. Each student participating will leave with his or her own handmade mask, created with the assistance of UCM art education students.
Enrollment is open on a first-come, first-served basis, with the class limited to 20. There is no charge for the event.
“Our Gallery Kids events have been hugely popular,” said Christian Cutler, gallery director, in a news release. “We created Gallery Kids as a way to reach out to the community in an effort to bring more community members into the UCM’s Gallery of Art and Design, which is a wonderful space to experience regional, national and international visual art and design.”
Cutler said gallery exhibits change every three to four weeks. In addition to Gallery Kids, the galleries will be open for visitors. Currently on display is “2014 Summit Art Exhibition,” an exhibition of new works by members of the Lee’s Summit Art group.  The exhibition features the black and white and color photography of Ramon Magee.
