Samuel Harry Briscoe, 90, of Warrensburg, Missouri, died Wednesday, June 25, at the Missouri State Veterans Home in Warrensburg.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 28, at the First Christian Church in Warrensburg with Pastor Jerry Basye officiating. Pallbearers will be Marion Hall, Jim Hull, Stephen Briscoe, Scott Briscoe, Bradley Briscoe and Rick Briscoe. Honorary pallbearer will be Dan Smith.
Interment followed at Sunset Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided.
He was born March 2, 1924, in Fayetteville, Missouri, the son of Sandy Harry and Ruth Ann (Samuel) Briscoe.
He was united in marriage to Lucille K. Keltner on Feb. 23, 1946, in Sedalia, Missouri.
Sammy attended Mt. Moriah Grade School and graduated from Farmers High School in 1941. He then attended Central Missouri State College until Feb. 6, 1943, when he joined the Army Air Corps. Sammy served 28 months in the South Pacific Campaign during World War II and earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. After being discharged on Dec. 31, 1945, he joined his father, Harry Briscoe, in the family construction business in 1946 and continued to own and operate Briscoe & Son General Contractors until his retirement in 1986. Sammy was a member of the First Christian Church of Warrensburg, where he served as deacon and on numerous church boards. He was a 50-year member of the Warrensburg American Legion Post 131 and a member of VFW Post 2513. Sammy was a member and past president of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member and past president of the Warrensburg High School Tiger Booster Club. He served on the Warrensburg Parks and Recreation Board during the development of Cave Hollow Park. Sammy was also a lifetime member of the Carpenters and Millwrights Union of Greater Kansas City.
Samuel is survived by two sons, Stephen Briscoe and wife, Janet, of Parkville, Missouri; and Rick Briscoe and wife, Kathie, of Warrensburg; four grandchildren, Scott Briscoe and spouse, Dale Schmick, of Platte City, Missouri; Ashley Cox and husband, Jesse, of Platte City; Bradley Briscoe and wife, Lindsay, of Linn Creek, Missouri; and Kelli Briscoe of St. Louis, Missouri; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter and Morgan Cox of Platte City; and Reid Samuel Briscoe of Linn Creek.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille, on Nov. 1, 1995; and a sister, Gloria Blacksmith, on Oct. 16, 2000.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Building Fund or the Veterans Assistance League of Warrensburg and both can be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
