(WARRENSBURG, Mo., digitalBURG)— Students, faculty, staff and Carnegians gathered in the quad of the University of Central Missouri Wednesday to watch the unveiling of the new bronze bust of Dale Carnegie.
Carnegie is a UCM alumnus who created a self-improvement training course and wrote the world-famous book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”
Gersham Nelson, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, said Carnegie’s legacy speaks to the role that UCM can have in inspiring students.
“In addition to honoring and celebrating the Carnegie legacy by unveiling his bust, our more expansive goal is to inspire current and future students to explore with persistence,” Nelson in a news release. “We want to remind students and all who contemplate the Carnegie legacy that our aspirations define our limits and that our limits are yet to be defined.”
Adam Blood, a UCM graduate student, and Mariah Suddarth, a senior, had the honor of lifting the cover off the statue.
Recently, the university started its first chapter of a Dale Carnegie National Honor Society for students who are interested in communications.
Matt Gilmore, a member of the UCM speech and debate team and the honor society, said it is exciting to be part of the first university to have something like this.
“Its absolutely wonderful to have another organization on campus that promotes business and communication ideals,” Gilmore said.
Kaila Todd, also a member of UCM speech and debate and the honor society, said Carnegie left a strong legacy here.
“It’s fantastic that an alumnus of the University of Central Missouri  is able to give back so much to not only the society but to a campus and future students,” Todd said.
The Carnegians endowed the Carnegian and Dale Carnegie Scholarship through the UCM Foundation in 2008. UCM also has developed a partnership with Dale Carnegie Training that makes the Dale Carnegie Course available at UCM, allowing graduates of the course to receive college credit from UCM, according to a news release.
