Louise Laverne Mayfield

Louise LaVerne Mayfield, 93, of Warrensburg, died Saturday, Sept. 14 at Western Missouri Medical Center.

Louise (Gregg) Mayfield Feb 2003She was born on October 13, 1919 in Lone Jack, Mo., to Luther Lentillus Gregg, Jr. and Flora Louise Maness Gregg. She was married to William Evans Mayfield on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1942.

Louise began her career as a teacher in a one-room school in 1939 where she was responsible for lighting the stove and warming the room in the wintertime before the students arrived. After marrying Bill during World War II, she found work in the bustling war industry of that period in Wichita and Dodge City, Kan. and San Bernardino, Calif. as Bill was transferred across the country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

After the war, Louise returned to Warrensburg to complete her college education while working at Citizens Bank. Bill and Louise purchased a 200 acre farm between Chilhowee and Centerview where they would reside for 44 years and she returned to teaching, eventually earning a Specialist degree.

Louise taught shorthand and typing at the high school level in Higginsville and Warrensburg, before finishing the last 20 years of her career at the University of Central Missouri.  In the final two years of her career she taught computer keyboarding as well.  Louise was a wonderful wife, sister, aunt, cousin, sister in-law, and friend.  She will be loved and cherished by her family as long as we live.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Warrensburg and the ABC Club, the Delta Zeta Sorority.

Louise is survived by her sister, Doris Scott and husband Keith of Springfield, Mo., her sister in-law, Eleanor Louise Gregg of Warrensburg, her nephew Jared Scott and wife Pam of Springfield, Mo., four nieces, Mary Ann Scott Pratt and husband Randall of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Bethene Gregg of Roeland Park, Kan., and Janis Dickson Gregg and husband Roger of Richmond, Vir., and Ann Holmstrom and husband Ralph, and nephews Robert Snider and wife Carlene, and Lucian Snider and wife Jeannie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her brother Luther Lentillus Gregg III, and sons William Ronald and Loren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at the First United Methodist with Reverend Louie Lowe officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church and may be left in care of Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg.
