Jens volleyball wins first match of Peggy Martin Challenge

(WARRENSBURG, Mo.) – The Central Missouri Jennies hosted their first match of the season and advanced to 5-0, in the opening match of the Peggy Martin Challenge versus the Winona State University Warriors, according to a press release. Central held the Warriors to under 20 points each set, 25-18 25-13 25-14.
In the first set, Becca Blaise was the only Jennie to reach double digits in kills, with 11, while Julia Bates had 32 assists. Winona trailed Central Missouri by five points for a majority of the set, the Jennies took the lead on the fifth point of the set and never lost it. The final point was brought home by a kill from by Haley Thompson, her eighth of the set.
In the second set, the Jennies were leading 4-3 when Courtney Cornell began serving. Central Missouri won nine consecutive points, several Jennies contributed kills to the point streak along with two serving aces from Cornell. Central Missouri only allowed one point, before again taking over the game, winning four more points in a row for the Jennies, making the score 19-6. Winona was able to make a small come back, before Maddie Jones finished off the set with a kill. Thompson led the team in kills for the second set, with only 5, while Bates ended the set with 12 assists.
In final set of the match Central Missouri held the Warriors to under 10 points for a majority of the set, earning 8 points to raise the score from 10-16 to 18-6. The Warriors finally broke double digits at 20-10, but at that point it was too late. Winona earned four more points in the set, but the match was settled when Carly Sojka drilled in a serving ace, her first of the match and seventh of the season.
The Peggy Martin Challenge continues tonight and tomorrow, in Warrensburg. Friday the Jennies take on McKendree at 1:00 p.m. and Ferris State at 7:00 p.m. Saturday they will face Minnesota-Moorhead at 12:00 p.m. and Colorado-Colorado Springs at 6:00 p.m.
