Mo. man allegedly left wife in squalid conditions

(INDEPENDENCE, Mo., AP) — A 58-year-old Independence man is facing charges after apparently leaving his ailing wife sitting in a recliner for several days in filthy conditions.
Gary R. Raps was charged Monday with one count of second-degree elder abuse after Independence police found his 73-year-old wife in their home on Sunday.
According to court records, Raps told police that his wife had been sitting in a recliner for several days. Hospital personnel said the woman was in critical condition, weighed only about 70 pounds and had severe bedsores. Court records indicate the recliner was covered with filth and insects.
Raps said he thought his wife would get better but when she didn’t he didn’t know what to do and “gave up” on her.
Online court records don’t indicate if Raps has an attorney.
